I hope you are enjoying the amazing tips that Jennifer has put together for you this month at Simple Scrapper. Week 2 of Capture the Season has ended, and Jenn has assembled another amazing week of resources for photography, journaling, scrapbooking, and more. If you haven't downloaded the workbook yet, I encourage you to do so; there's still plenty of time to get on board with this project.
Just as I did last week, I want to share my week 2 assignment with you. I haven't created my layout yet, but using this space to make notes about my journaling, my photos, and my layout design/products means I can pull this information up quickly and easily in early January when I make time to scrap these pages after the holiday bustle has ended.
JOURNALING:
This week's assignment says:
The use of evergreen trees, boughs and wreaths around Christmas has its roots in ancient festivals celebrating the return of the sun at the Winter Solstice, affirming the ongoing cycle of life. These meanings and symbols have evolved through history as cultures have interpreted them in connection with their own traditions and beliefs. Use images of your home’s holiday décor to explore the personal meaning of traditions in your family.
I started with a list again, just like I always do when I'm faced with a writing assignment. This time around, I made a simple list of all the holiday decorations we put up in our home:
- our tree
- family ornaments
- garland and paper chains on doorways and windows
- wreath on front door
- small tree in each girl's room
- my Willow Tree nativity set
- stockings by the windows
- paper tree decorations on mantel
- Santa figurines throughout rooms in house
- holiday train set on bookshelf
- deer and star lights outside
With this week's journaling, I've decided I'd like to include my family more in the process, so rather than write about one or more of these objects, I'm going to have Chris and the girls tell me what their favorite holiday decoration is and why (I already know that Cami will vote for our little Christmas train).
PHOTOS:
I'll use the week before Christmas (because I'll be off work all week during the day) to take photos of the 4 holiday decor items we choose. Both of the templates (shown below) have space for more than 4 photos, but I'll adapt them as necessary. This is an instance where I'm really torn between the two templates; I love the blocky graphic feel of the first one, but I like the additional space for journaling on the second one. I'll have to decide which one to use, or figure out a way to combine them. (The templates are free, and you can download them here -- scroll to the bottom of the post.)
DESIGN:
Choosing a kit for this week's templates was fairly easy. My friend Liz is the guest designer at The Lilypad this month. She's collaborated with Amy Wolff on this sweet new Christmas kit called "All I Need." The best part is that it works beautifully with the kit she put together for their BYOC project, so even though I'm using two different kits, there's still a very cohesive feel to my Christmas pages.
(I also couldn't resist playing with the kit as soon as I got it, so I put together a simple layout about our annual town Christmas parade. Enjoy!)
Super cool, love them!
