While I was in Lexington recently, I had a chance to visit Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill. I'd been to one other Shaker museum -- the one located in South Union -- but it wasn't nearly as large as this one, which makes sense, since Pleasant Hill is the largest restored Shaker community in the United States. It was a lovely June afternoon, and I spent three or four hours just wandering through the buildings and exploring the countryside.
I've done some reading about the Shakers, and while there is much about their lifestyle that I don't agree with, I do think that their focus on work -- and seeing everyday tasks as a way to worship God -- and the marriage of form and function in everything that surrounds them, as well as the pursuit of a simple lifestyle, to be things that I'd like to achieve in my own life.
