taken from Goodreads:
"Two unusual families-the shapeshifting Morgans and the Haskell witches-have maintained an uneasy alliance for generations. Now the vengeful spirit of a dark sorcerer will force them to unite once more-or turn against one another."
I had to force myself to finish this one, which is unfortunate because I've really enjoyed Hetley's previous work. Urban fantasy is one of my favorite subgenres, and it's not easy to find authors who do it well. But this time, I was just constantly annoyed about every single aspect of Hetley's writing.
The biggest issue for me was that every single character sounded just the same -- and to make matters worse, they sounded like the author too. Many writers have a distinctive voice, but that voice doesn't become the voice of every character as well. Hetley's writing is a near-constant stream of sentence fragments and cliches, peppered with opinions that seem more author-based than character-based. Although the plot of this story is less action-driven, there's not enough character development to really push things as far as they needed to be pushed, so much of the story falls flat. All in all, a disappointment from every angle.
