the sickies and March goals

Cami came home early from school on Friday with a sore throat and a fever. When we took her to the doctor on Saturday, the results were just what we thought -- strep throat. We've been lucky this year in that both girls haven't been sick at all -- and there have been lots of yuckies going around. So now Cami has some nasty-tasting bubblegum flavor medicine that she hates to take but does with minimal fussing. This will get harder the better she feels, I know, but we're just happy to have gone through one night with very little fever to deal with. She was quite the sick girlie on Friday and Saturday night.

Aside from that, I spent some time working on a new class for {we are} storytellers and getting ready for a special I'll be running on Wednesday. I'm considering a CT call as well -- I just have to get myself organized enough to get this all together. That's my biggest problem -- when it's just me, then all of my last-minute work habits are okay to deal with, but when other people get involved, then I start feeling bad.

I can't believe the end of the month has snuck up on my like this either. I didn't do so well at all with my March goals. This ended up being such a busy month -- Cass had soccer or track every single day after school, and my three classes got super-busy. So my March goals suffered -- the emergency kits still aren't completed; instead of the jacket, I worked on embroidering linen napkins; Chris and I set up a quasi-workout routine (more on that later this week -- I do have some links I want to share with you); and Chris's scarf is only about three inches long. I did get a number of books read this month -- I have quite a stack in the closet now to take to McKay's on my next visit (hopefully during the end of April, when I go down for the flea market at the Nashville fairgrounds). The only one I can really recommend with any real feeling is The Likeness by Tana French. All the rest were mostly so-so in my opinion.

I've gone ahead and posted my April list -- it's longer than I'll get to, but those are the books on my nightstand that I'd picking from this month, so stay posted to see which ones I end up reading through the month and which ones get postponed a bit longer. I like having a good bit of choice in the matter.

Oh -- and I did a little blog overhaul. Thought it was time for a new look. What do you think?

What a great spring break I had...nothing special, but I was able to just focus and get a bunch of little things done around the house and for my shop, without having to stop and take care of other things. It was nice to just have that quiet time by myself here at home each day.

and more like a frantic game of catch-up-on-all-kinds-of-stuff...

I thought yesterday was going to end up a rainy blah kind of day, but the sun came out and temps climbed into the lower 60s, though it was very windy and downright chilly by the time Cassidy's soccer game started. I caught a glimpse of this bright spot out my window early yesterday morning -- there is a honeysuckle vine next door which has bloomed and is providing a cheery splash of color against the otherwise gray and dreary fencerow:

Something else that makes me smile -- a tiny clue that Cami has been here. Some of her little toys tucked among Chris's dragon collection:

I've been wanting to work on my recipe collection, but I'm just completely stumped as to how to store the recipes. Do I want to tear pages out and put them in clear sleeves in a binder? Or write/type them on index cards and find a vintage wooden box for them? I just don't know...nothing appeals to me. This is what they look like right now -- a stack of pages torn from magazines. I don't have a cookbook collection (other than the trusty Betty Crocker one you see in the photo), and I don't have a lot of counter space. These tear sheets actually sit on top of a ceramic plate, which rests on top of my microwave in the little space between it and the cabinets above it. How do you store and organize your recipes? I'd love any suggestions you can give me!

I'm taking things easy around the house this week; Spring Break started yesterday for the staff at the university, so I've got a nice 5-day weekend going on. Yesterday was beautiful, so I opened the windows and did a lot of Spring Cleaning-type stuff. Today, however, is rainy and grey, so I'll probably spend my time getting ahead in my classwork and waiting to see if Cassidy's soccer game today will be canceled.

the wearin' o' the green

St. Patrick's Day has always been a pretty big day in my family, because both my mom's dad and my little sister both have birthdays today! My little sis is just gorgeous and hilarious and in fabulous shape; she works as an athletic trainer with area high schools and really excels at her job. I'm quite proud of her.

back and forth

Cami was explaining to Chris the other night about how March comes in like a lion "because it is all ferocious and mean" and then goes out like a lamb -- and that's definitely been appropriate for the past week. I guess by this point we should be accustomed to weird weather, but I still find it unsettling. Last weekend was just gorgeous -- in the 70s, sunny, blue skies and all, even if the ground was nothing but a giant mudpuddle. Here's what the neighbor's tree looks like:

By the end of the week, we had temps in the 30s and got this all day on Thursday:

Yeah, that's sleet. At least it wasn't freezing rain. I've had enough of that kind of weather to last for a long, long time.

The weekend was busy -- lots of little projects working their way to completion. Like repotting our garlic sprouts -- even though we didn't intend to grow any garlic this year, we ended up with some little seedlings. I had a number of garlic cloves from Chris's uncle Dick's garden in a small apothecary jar on the windowsill in my kitchen. Looking at them the other day, I realized that they had sprouted and started roots and everything. I'm not sure, since this jar seals and I assumed they would need oxygen, but regardless, we've got a whole pot full of little garlic sprouts now (with a watchful T.Rex reigning over all):

I picked up some more cloth napkins while shopping with Mom this weekend, which prompted me to pull out the linen ones I had here at home and start a little embroidery project. I'm really liking how the first one has turned out; now just three more to go:

9 years

Today is our 9th wedding anniversary. We both had to work -- spent the day driving mostly -- but we're heading out for a family dinner out tonight, to celebrate. Then it will be home and back to the usual routine: baths and showers, homework, snuggling and stories, some computer or knitting time, a little more homework for me while he watches TV, then bed. Just a regular day, just the way we like it: home, together. Us.

This first kit is one of my very favorites -- I just love this color scheme, and I'm so thrilled at how it turned out. Every time I look at it, I fall in love with it just a little bit more. It's called "Family Tree," and there's also a fun coordinating alpha that reminds me of quilt blocks. Check out the previews and look at these gorgeous layouts that Steph and Kelly created:

I've also released a set of Sibling Word Art quotes -- a lot of digi-scrappers have complained about the lack of word arts created for brothers and sisters, so I thought I'd take a stab at solving that problem. I'm so happy with the way these turned out -- LOVE THEM!

These last two products are re-releases of older products (from Oscraps and ScrapinStyleTV): a Chippy Numbers element pack and Fresh Outlook, a bright and sunny spring kit (this one's HUGE!) Julie Ann made the CUTEST layout with this kit, too! I also repackaged a set of quickpages using the Fresh Outlook kit.
